Notice this verse: &lquot;I beseech Euodias, and I beseech Syntyche, that they be of the same mind in the Lord&rquot; (Phil. 4:2)?
It does not say &lquot;I beseech Euodias and Syntyche&rquot; but the apostle (the Spirit really through him) beseeches each individual personally. A personal appeal to you and a personal appeal to me to reconsider my views and my attitude of heart towards one I may have a difficulty with.
It does not say either &lquot;I beseech Euodias to be of the same mind as Syntyche&rquot; nor &lquot;I beseech Syntyche to be of the same mind as Euodia&rquot; but to &lquot;be of the same mind in the Lord&rquot;. This is truly searching for each. Why would we not be of the same mind in the Lord? There must be an obstacle with me, personally! We may have differing views about some Scriptures or some matter but we can be of the same mind about them — that is to leave each other room for exercise and liberty of soul, trusting the Lord to make things plain in his time and go on in happy fellowship one with another and the Lord (cf 1 Cor. 16:12). This is not for the allowance of evil or bad doctrine but for the respect of the other's conscience (Romans 14). May we personally take heed to the beseeching and not be of a different mind because then it cannot be in the Lord!
