Meditation number 51

THE TERROR OF THE LORD

KNOWING THEREFORE THE TERROR OF THE LORD, WE PERSUADE MEN (2 Cor. 5:11) Jesus knew what would befall Jerusalem in the years following His rejection, death and resurrection and, in divine sympathy, He wept over the city, over the many souls who would be found in her then (Luke 19:42-44). Jesus knew and had warned them solemnly on many occasions, either Himself, or through John the Baptist or the apostles (Mat. 3:7-10, Luc 3:7, Luc 13:5). But they listened not, they hearkened not, they believed Him not nor did they received Him. History reports that in the sole destruction of Jerusalem, in the year 70 AD, by the Roman armies under Titus, the son of Vespasien, the Roman Emperor, 1,100,100 Jews perished, most of them through a violent and atrocious death. The events foretold did come to pass as predicted – a great woe for which unbelief is alone to be blamed. Paul could say to the Christians of Ephesus that he was pure from their blood for he had declared unto them the whole counsel of God (Acts 20:26-27). We know what awaits this poor world, woes which will shortly come to pass on the inhabited earth. And by this very Email we want to warn men. Had you known for sure in advance of what was being planned against the World Trade Center in New York, would you have kept silent, not warning anyone, or would you have set out, in the full measure of your abilities, to warn people so they could avoid or escape from such a catastrophe. Our cowardice would not be so great as to keep silent would it? The same Lord Who had warned the Jews of Jerusalem of their coming fate, speaks to us expressly today of what will very shortly come upon the earth (Luke 21:25-26), and sure words they are. The extent of suffering and horror all through the soon coming apocalypse cannot be compared with the limited, isolated yet undescribable horror of what has just taken place in the USA. This terror of the Lord compels us to persuade men. His love for you contrains us also. We beseech you, we entreat for Christ, be reconciled to God (2 Cor. 5:20 NT).
