Meditation number 54

THE FIVE SENSES

It is interesting to notice that God presented Himself to man in such a way that he could experience Him with each of his five senses. Here are some examples:

Taste: "O taste and see" (Ps. 34:8)

See: "Behold and see" (Lam. 1:12) "That… which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon" (1 John 1:1)

Hear: "That which we have heard"(1 John 1:1). Incline your ear… hear and your soul shall live"(Isaiah 55:3)

Feel: "What… our hands have handled of the Word of life"(1 John 1:1). "Handle me (or touch me)" (Luke 24:39).

Smell: "Thy name is as ointment (perfume) poured forth" (Song of Sol. 1:3) "The house was filled with the odour of the ointment" (John. 12:3) "God... maketh manifest the savour of His knowledge by us.. for we are unto God a sweet savour (or smell) of Christ" (2 Cor. 2:14-15).

In addition, He Who has made us in His own image, smells (Gen. 8:21), touches (Mark. 1:41), hears (1 Pet. 3:12), sees (Prov. 15:3), and tastes (Mat. 27:34, Heb. 2:9). This truly reminds us of the perfect humanity of our Lord Jesus, the head of the body (Eph.1:22), Who was tempted in all things like us, sin apart, One Who can really sympathize with our infirmities (Heb. 4:15). The One Who thus shares the sensitivity of our bodies has called us to share in the sensitivity of His body, the church; it is indeed a remarkable fact that the sense of feeling is the only one of our fives senses that the head shares with all the members of the body (1 Cor. 12:26-27).
