From Gems from my readings #1362
Everything that happens in our lives, whether good or bad, can be used of the Lord to make known to us His will and the magnitude of His grace. This is truly encouraging, for all of us would like to believe that the many failures of our past are not without meaning. In Romans 5:3,4 we see the importance of experience and what it produces when God's love fills our hearts.
The story is told of a young cashier in a bank who showed great promise. Recognizing his abilities, the board of directors decided that he would make a fine successor to the president, who was about to retire. One day the young fellow went to the senior officer rather timidly and asked, "As you know, I'm to follow you as president of this bank, and I'd be grateful for any advice you might have." The old gentleman said, "Son, sit down! I"ve got two words for you, just two words: right decisions!"The young man thought for a moment and replied, "That's very helpful, sir, but how does one go about making right decisions?" "One word - Experience!" That's also helpful, Sir, but how does one go about gaining experience?" "Two words," said the old man, "wrong decisions!"
"I'm not suggesting that we can learn what's right only by doing what's wrong. How much better to obey the clear instruction of God's Word at all times. But when we don't, even the black marks left on our record can bring us new measures of Divine grace. The painful consequences of our sins are often irreversible. But we profit from them for they allow us to experience the grace and faithfulness of the Lord and, as a result, bring renewed hope as to the future. (Selected)
"The reason the school of experience is so tough is that you get the test first and lesson later."
